Building Bridges

The Talking Lounge is a new community space located on the ground floor in Nelson. It has been created to bring people from different backgrounds together in a welcoming and accessible environment. The aim is to strengthen community connections, build trust, and create a shared sense of belonging.
The hub will host planned conversations and shared activities that encourage people to get to know one another, understand different perspectives, and develop positive relationships. A strong focus is placed on youth citizenship and leadership development, supporting young people to become active, confident contributors within their community.

The project makes better use of existing, underused local spaces by turning them into places where meaningful social connections can grow. Two key initiatives support this work:
• The Talking Society, which promotes constructive and respectful public conversations on issues that matter locally.
• Communities in Action, which delivers activities at both ward and town level to bring people together, reduce social division, and strengthen community resilience.
Together, these activities help create a more connected, inclusive, and supportive Nelson community.
